BIRCHES GROUP FINDS UGANDA COMPENSATION LEVELS IN NEW SURVEY INCREASE 19% OVER 2008 LEVELS

New York, N.Y. – October 1, 2009 – International human resources consultant Birches Group LLC has announced the results of their annual total compensation survey in Uganda.  The survey was conducted in Kampala during the month of June 2009, capturing data from a broad cross-section of employers in the local labour market, including leaders in banking, consumer products, telecommunications, and international public sector organizations.

The survey results show an overall increase in total compensation of 19% in 2009 as compared to 2008.  Support staff positions increased an average of 12.7%, while professional staff salaries increased an average of 24.7%.  High-level professionals and managers enjoyed the highest level of increases.

In Uganda, consolidated salary scales are the norm and allowances are rarely distinguished from base pay.  As a result, total compensation packages at all levels reflect a fairly simple composition of base salary, plus a few benefits.  Consolidated base salaries make up 85-90% of the total salary package.  A 13th month bonus, free meals or monetary food allowances, and a transportation-related benefit often comprise the remainder of the package. Transportation-related benefits exist primarily as cash allowances, rather than as in-kind benefits, such as company buses.  There are a few instances of company car benefits being paid to Managerial/Professional staff.

Profit-sharing arrangements are present, in more regular instances at the professional levels than for support staff positions.  Variable compensation arrangements are not too common in the Ugandan market.   Profit-sharing arrangements and performance-based pay comprise just 3% of total compensation packages --- though this portion reaches 5% at more senior managerial levels.
